Abimael Guzmán
Manuel Rubén Abimael Guzmán Reynoso, a former professor of philosophy, was the leader of the Maoist insurgency that the press and many people refer to as "Shining Path" (Sendero Luminoso in Spanish) which has been active in Peru since the late 1970s and began what it calls "the armed struggle" on March 17, 1980. Wanted on charges of terrorism and treason, Guzmán was captured by the Peruvian government in 1992 and sentenced to life imprisonment; (born 3 December, 1934).
